If the Dordogne is a department “of a thousand châteaux”, the south of the department is undeniably a land of châteaux, bastides and wine!

Follow the river that gives our department its name, from the picturesquely named village of Le Buisson, to the gateway to the Gironde and the famous battle of Castillon, and discover the thousand and one stories of the Bergerac region.

Château de Monbazillac

Just a few kilometers from the town center and the tourist office, stands the Château de Monbazillac.

Visible from the road leading up to its gates, this 16th-century edifice, listed as a Historic Monument, gave its name to the village renowned for its wines.

Château de Monbazillac was classified as a historic monument by decree on February 20, 1941.

A tourist nugget, the site is open to visitors, offering a 300m2 area dedicated to the discovery of viticulture, as well as various exhibitions and family events in summer.

Château de Bridoire

Today, it’s one of the most visited tourist sites in the greater Bergerac region, with over 20,000 visitors a year.

Dating back to the earliest constructions in the 12th century, this vast residence retains the prestige for which the département “aux mille châteaux” is renowned.

However, the current owners have tastefully renovated 15 furnished rooms that are open to the public, and offer a wide range of leisure activities in this green setting.

Montaigne Castle and Tower

One of our region’s most illustrious figures is the man of letters Michel de Montaigne, who was born in a château that bears his name.

40 km from Bergerac, close to the Montaigne Montravel and Gurçon partner territories (M de Montaigne is definitely everywhere), in the heart of a majestic park stands a château that has been altered and rebuilt several times. Ravaged by fire, it was finally rebuilt in 1884.

La Tour de Montaigne

The Tour de la librairie, listed as a historic monument in 1952, is the perfect place to discover or deepen your knowledge of the writer’s work. It provides a complete overview of his life, times, work and thoughts.
